Respondent's answers to my surveyFrom the first question ‘what do you expect in an opening sequence?’ I learnt that most people said titles was a thing they expected to see in an opening sequence so I will definitely make sure that I include titles in mine. A few people also said short clips from the film, this will give the audience an idea of what the film is going to involve and parts of the film. Another thing that is in most film opening sequences is music. This adds to the theme of the film as the films usually include music that fits nicely with the genre of the film and it also builds suspense before the film has started. Most people that took this survey were in the age group of 18-24 and 37.5% thought that Skyfall was the best opening sequence and another 37.5% thought that Dead Pool was. The other 25% preferred Suicide Squad. This shows that the favourite opening sequences were Sky Fall and Dead Pool. This will help towards making my opening sequence as I can see the sort of action films people prefer. If I was to change my survey and make it better I would have made Q4 multiple choice so I could see what people had chosen clearer. For my question ‘what advice would you give for someone creating an opening sequence?’ I got a lot of answers saying to make it interesting and engaging to the audience. This will help me as I will need to make my opening sequence intriguing to the watchers so that they want to watch the rest of the film. One respondent’s answer also said to make it link to the narrative and the genre of the film so the viewers get an understanding of what the film is going to be about and who is starring in the film. I will try to do this in my opening sequence to make it more appealing. I also asked people what they liked or disliked about the opening sequence Catch Me If You Can to see what sort of things people do and don’t like about an action opening sequence. From my results I gathered that people liked how the sequence was an animation and how the theme was simplistic but one person said that they disliked how none of it is real life. I will take all of these answers into consideration when making my opening sequence to make it as interesting as possible but also to not give too much about the film away just to demonstrate the theme of the film. For question 7 I asked my respondents what genre they thought the film Mission Impossible was to see how obvious the genre of the film would be just from watching the opening sequence. The respondents knew that the opening sequence was the genre action due to the fighting scenes/weapons, as well as quick cuts and a fast paced editing style. From this i can understand that these are things included in an opening sequence and that I can consider including these sort of things in my sequence. I then asked what people like about an action opening sequence and what people expect to see. There was a fault in my survey as I had already asked what people expect to see however, asking what people like about an action sequence is useful as I can carry the sort of things they like out into my titles sequence. When I asked what peoples favourite action films are they all said different. However, some of the films are linked as being action superhero films, for example suicide squad, batman and dead pool. Asking this question will help me to know what kind of films under the action genre people prefer and to understand why they prefer them and what they include In them to make them favourable. I then asked what action sequence people preferred out of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Casino Royale and Men In Black. Nobody preferred Mission Impossible but half and half preferred Casino Royale and Men In Black. From these results it helps me to choose what my opening sequence is going to be like, as I can consider including aspects of Casino Royale or Men in Black in my opening sequence.
The first opening sequence i analysed was Sky Fall so i researched the sort of people who liked this film on You Gov and learnt a bit more about the people who liked the film and what their other interests are. The demographics show that most of the people who are fans of sky fall are men and between the age of 40-54. Their favourite movies also include other James bond films for example Casino Royale which i also did an in depth analysis on. The people who liked Casino Royale the most were also men between the age of 40-54. This shows that the people who liked this film are most likely to be James Bond fans with an interest for action packed films. This helps with my research as it gives me an idea that an opening sequence similar to a James Bond film would mainly be targeted at men. Both audiences that liked Casino Royale and Sky fall both use Facebook and read the magazine four four two which shows that audiences of this genre of film have the same interests. This helps me as it makes it easier to understand what media the audience has an interest in, to advertise my film. The people who liked the film Casino Royale also said they liked the film Mission Impossible which is the other film i analysed. These films show a clear link that they attract the same kind of target audience which means i can pitch my film around the target audiences similar interests. If they all like the films, making one similar to the films i analysed shows that they will most likely like the film or want to watch it.
